Strengthening Our Common Life

Our innovative, accredited heritage skills training programme, Strengthening Our Common Life (SOCL) is now in its 4th year, and continues to offer bursary-supported, work-based traineeships at leading museums, galleries, historic homes and arts organisations in the UK.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Skills for the Future initiative, SOCL aims to meet one of HLF’s core objectives: to increase workforce diversity across the heritage sector by enabling young people from sections of the population historically under-represented at decision-making levels in the UK heritage sector and receive paid training within its institutions.

Participation and positive engagement with heritage is an important early factor in encouraging individuals to consider, and apply for, heritage roles later in life. Therefore, SOCL host partners also embed community engagement and reinterpretation activities into all trainee work programmes, as a means of diversifying audiences.

To date, 70 young people, the majority of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and Faith heritage, have received training through the programme (SOCL1, SOCL2 and SOCL3 Year One). A further 17 are currently in post for SOCL3 Year Three.
